Bodmin Moor is a granite moor land which renowned for its beauty and tranquillity. Measuring just ten miles by ten miles, it has been officially designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty by Cornwall AONB.
In ancient times the area would have been forest land before being cleared to be used for agricultural purposes around 4000 years ago. Eventually, around 2500-600BC, settlements were established and Bodmin Moor became far more densely populated. The evidence of these settlements can still be seen today in terms of the stone circles, megalithic chambers and standing stones which are dotted around the moor. The moor even contributes some of the Cornish myths and legends with its mysterious Dozmary Pool which linked to the legend of King Arthur and Excalibur.
Today Bodmin Moor is thinly populated but still contains some 500 holdings, with about 10,000 cows and 55,000 sheep. As anybody who has ever travelled over the moor will tell you, it provides home to many wild ponies and horses and you can even go on organised horse-riding holidays and treks across the moor.
