The Monkey Sanctuary, situated close to the beautiful harbour town of Looe is a great example of this. If you are interested in learning more about this original tourist attraction before arriving at your holiday cottage in Cornwall then why not begin with our brief description outlined below.

The Monkey Sanctuary has been home to a colony of 14 woolly monkeys since 1964. The present day monkeys are 3rd and 4th generation descendants of monkeys who were rescued forty years ago after they had brought to England as pets. The sanctuary was originally set up on the beautiful Cornish coast as a means of providing a stable colony for the monkeys to prevent them from living their lives in isolation. From this extensive grassed territory, the monkeys regained their natural social skills. They now raise their own young and communicate with one another as they would in the wild, enabling them to establish an organised hierarchy.

As a visitor to the Monkey Sanctuary you are in the unique and privileged position of being able to watch the monkeys behave as they would in their natural habitat. You also have the opportunity to speak to the monkey’s keepers and learn more about the monkey’s behaviour. It is a great day out which is loved by children and adults alike.

As well as the monkeys, the sanctuary has also had a new addition in the form of a colony of rare horseshoe bats. This has led to the cellar of “'Murrayton House” which is a grade II listed building built in 1854, being set up as “Bat Cave”. As a visitor you will be able to see the bats in their natural habitat, the “Bat Cave” thanks to a special CCTV link.

You will also have access to a full range of facilities including:
